“I see now that the circumstances of one’s birth is irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are.” Can you believe that Mewtwo was the one to say this quote? That was deep when I first heard this when I was a kid and it is still deep now. Like many of us out there, Pokémon was a huge part of my childhood growing up. It is always fun to see other’s take what we have loved as a child and turn it into something in the yarn community. Today our newest guest on Yarn Punk will be showing us her Pokémon inspired project that you can make for yourself or others.

Let’s give a Blast Off Welcome to Joni!

Whassup, interwebs? I’m Joni from CrochetBoss.com.  I am fairly new to the pattern design game, and I am super pumped to share my Pokéball Slipper Pattern with you!  I started crocheting years ago, but only recently realized that maybe I, too, can contribute to the growing network of yarn-y designers online.  Probably like many of you, most of my favorite projects started with someone asking, “Do you think you could make me a ………..”

I have been asked to make some crazy fun gifts over the past several years.  My two teenagers have been great supporters, and I designed these slippers for my daughter’s love of all things Pokémon.  I hope they will also bless you or someone you love. Of course, these could be made in any color combination without adding the button, or you could add another applique in the center.

Hook – Size H (5.00mm) I LOVE my Susan Bates hook with bamboo handle

Abbreviations:

Sc2tg – single crochet 2 stitches together

Slipper instructions (Make 2)

With white yarn –

Round 1:  Ch 3, 8 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, sl st to 1st hdc to join.  (8 hdc)

Round 2:  Ch 1, 2 hdc in each st around, sl st to 1st hdc to join. (16 hdc)

Round 3:  Ch 1, 1 hdc in each st around, sl st to 1st hdc to join. (16 hdc)

Round 4:  Ch 1, 2 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st.* Repeat between * and * around, sl st to 1st hdc to join.  (24 hdc)

Now we have our toe base done and we will start working our V-stitch rows!  This is where the slipper starts to take shape and the V-stitch pattern helps it go by so fast!

Round 5:  Ch 3, hdc in same st (counts as 1st Vst..)  Ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st, *ch 1, skip next st, Vst in next st, ch 1, skip next st, sc in next st.*  Repeat between * and * five  more times, ch 1, sl st in 2nd ch of beginning ch 3 to join.

Round 6:  Sl st into center of 1st Vst.  Ch 1, sc in same space. *Ch 1, Vst in next sc, ch 1, sc in center of next Vst.*   Repeat between * and * 4 more times.  Ch 1, Vst in next sc, ch 1, sl st in 1st sc to join.

Round 7:  Ch 3, hdc in same st (counts as 1st Vst.  Ch 1, sc in center of next Vst. *Ch 1, Vst in next sc, ch 1, sc in center of next Vst.*  Repeat between * and * 4 more times.  Ch 1, sl st in 2nd ch of beginning ch 3 to join.

Round_8: Repeat Round 6

Round_9: Repeat Round 7

Round_10: Repeat Round 6

Round_11: Repeat Round 7

Fasten off the white yarn and attach black yarn in beginning Vst of Round 11.

With black yarn –

Round 12:  Repeat Round 6

Round 13:  Repeat Round 7

Fasten off the black yarn and attach red yarn in begging Vst of Round 13.

With red yarn –

Round 14:  Ch 1, *2 hdc in Vst, hdc in ch 1 space BEFORE sc, hdc in ch 1 space AFTER sc,*  (no hdc in the sc stitch itself.)  Repeat between * and * around, sl st in 1st hdc to join.  (24 hdc)

Rounds 15-18:  Ch 1, hdc in each st around, sl st to 1st hdc to join. (24 hdc)

Round 19:  Ch 1, sc2tg over next 2 st, hdc in next 17 st, sc2tg over next 2 st, leaving last 3 st unworked.  (19 st)

Shaping

We will no longer work the slipper in the round.  Now we will be turning after each row to create the ankle and heel portion of the slipper.

Round 20-27:  Ch 1, turn. Hdc in each stitch across. (19 hdc)

Round 28:  Ch 1, turn.  Hdc in 1st 6 st, sc in next 2 st, sl st, sk 1 st, sl st, sc in next 2 st, hdc in last 6 st.  This row creates the taper we need to close the heel nicely.

Turn slipper inside out.  Leaving a 10” tail, fasten off and cut the red yarn, then thread the tail onto a yarn needle.

Fold the slipper sides up and sew the two halves of row 28 together to close the slipper.

Go ahead and weave in all of the ends to complete the slipper body and turn right side out.

Now we are ready to make our little Pokéball release button!  Don’t forget this part; you don’t wanna trap pikachu in there forever!

Pokéball Release Button

With white yarn –

Round 1:  Ch 3, 8 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, sl st to 1st hdc to join.  (8 hdc)

Round 2:  Ch 1, * 2hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st. * Repeat between * and * around, sl st to 1st hdc to join. (12 hdc)

Round 3:  Ch 1, * 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 st. * Repeat between * and * around, sl st to 1st hdc to join. (16 hdc)

Fasten off white yarn and attach black yarn to 1st hdc.

Round 4:  Ch 1, * 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 st. * Repeat between * and * around, sl st to 1st sc to join. (20 sc)

Fasten off, leaving a 2’ tail.

Cut another 2’ length of black yarn. Using a yarn needle, now embroider a black circle between rounds 1 and 2, and then going around 2-3 times to make a nice circle.

Using the black border tail, sew the button onto the center of the slipper body, over the black stripe.  The slight curve in the button will give it a 3d effect on the slipper.
