‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house. Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Nothing like a classic Christmas story to get you into the mood for the holidays. So much nostalgia flows through the Christmas spirit bringing you back to when you were a child waking up on Christmas morning to see the stockings full, the Christmas tree lit, and presents underneath the Christmas tree. Do you have any holiday traditions that you like to do with your loved ones? On the Yarn Punk blog today, we are bringing a new guest in for the Holiday Season. Though these critters cannot bippity boppity boop into horses and a carriage, they can be the perfect addition to your holiday decor.
Welcome to the Yarn Punk Blog Emma!
Hello! I’m Emma aka Inky Fox the Yarn Bandit. As a child I would sneak into my grandmother’s craft room and “borrow” her yarn and watercolors. She would often find me covered in paint and somehow tangled in yarn. As I enter my early thirties, I realize nothing has changed! You can find me most nights with my partner in giggles, Mr Yarn Bandit, working and reworking a new pattern idea, writing in my crochet journal with a fountain pen- hands splattered in ink, and yes, still untangling myself from yarn. I love to create fun, cute and colorful pieces that bring back the magic of childhood. It’s those small things that warm our hearts in the times we need it most. That’s my goal as a maker. My other goal is to get as much use out of my Hufflepuff robes as possible; your chances of me answering the door in them are quite high.
In my downtime you’ll find me cooking, crafting, drinking tea or coffee, journaling and listening to a variety of music from In This Moment to Ninja Sex Party to Salt-N-Pepa.

First of all, give yourself a high five for crocheting amazing, beautiful hand-crafted gifts to share with your loved ones. It doesn’t matter if it’s perfect or not, you are creating something from scratch with your hands and there’s not much that beats that kind of love.
Now what to do with that little bit of scrap yarn? I dunno about you, but I get done with a piece and look over to see leftover bits of skeins that aren’t enough for a full project, but too much to just toss or give to someone. So what to do with it? My answer: mouse amigurumi that could easily turn into an ornament, key chain or a last minute gift or stocking stuffer.
Below you’ll find a quick amigurumi mouse for not just medium weight yarn, but for bulky and super bulky yarns!

Mouse Amigurumi
Materials:
- Yarn- at least 25 yards in medium, bulky or super bulky weight
- Scissors
- Crochet hook– 3.25/3.5mm (medium) 3.5/4mm (bulky) 4/4.5mm (super bulky)
- Eyes– I used 6mm safety eyes but you can use beads, buttons (extra small) or thread/yarn to make a french knot– NOTE careful with the super bulky, some eye options will go straight through stitch spaces.
- Stuffing (fiber fill or scraps of yarn)
- Thread– for creating noses, to help sew pieces on, or for whiskers
- Glue (optional)– for those that can’t stand to sew and would rather glue pieces on, or for attaching eyes.
- Choice of hanging device (for hanging ornament)- ribbon, wire, thread, yarn, etc
Stitch Abbreviations
- MC- magic circle
- Ch- chain stitch
- Chbps- chain bumps
- Sc- single crochet
- Inc- increase or 2 single crochet stitches in the same stitch
- Dec- decrease or single crochet 2 stitches together
Notes About the Pattern
- The pattern for each weight is given below, followed by assembly instructions- which apply to all three patterns. The beauty of this pattern is that you don’t have to create all of the body parts! You can create the body, ears and tail and still have an adorable mouse. So if you run out of yarn for making feet and paws, NO WORRIES!
- Photos are for the medium weight pattern but can easily be adapted to the other weights since they will all have similar shape just not the same stitch count.
- I also included options for large ears or small ears for your mouse. Have fun, make it your own, and happy hooking!

Assembly (for all mice):
FACE SHAPING: Place PINS A, B, C, D, E, & F- These are the points in which you will be stringing a separate yarn on a needle to create the face shaping FIG 14 (medium) FIG 15 (bulky) FIG 16 (super bulky)

INSERT needle at point A and EXIT at point B -the inner part of the right eye. FIG 17
INSERT needle at point C -the top of the right eye and EXIT at point D -the top of the left eye. FIG 18
INSERT needle at point E -the inner part of the left eye and EXIT at point F (slightly off center to the left, should be one or two stitches between A and F). FIG 19
You’ll end up with the ends of the yarn under the chin. Pull both ends as tight as you like to get the look you want. I pull rather tight. Tie the ends together. FIG 20
String both ends into your needle, INSERT needle back into point F and EXIT to the back of the head, pull to hide knot.

EARS: with yarn tail in a needle, thread into the opposite end of the ear. Tie a knot with the starting tail to secure shape. From the top view, ears will be placed creating a square with the eyes. Pin if needed and sew in place. I like my inner ears facing outward, but you can also have the ears face forward. Make it yours! FIG 21
TIP: no need for fancy sewing. I simply take one tail to each side, tie and hide ends. Glue for extra security or use thread to add stability.
TAIL: Attach to the back side of the body. Tie, and weave end into body. FIG 22
PAWS: Attach to the front of the body just below the eyes. FIG 23
FEET: Attach to the front of the body or under the body… or even Pokemon style with one underneath and one to the front. FIG 24

NOSE and WHISKERS (optional): Using white, pink or black thread create nose. I wrap the thread a few times to create nose, then tie the ends. I then use the ends as the whiskers by exiting on each side of the nose and trimming to the desired length.
Finishing touches:
Use ribbon, yarn, thread or wire to add a loop for an ornament at the top of the head between the ears.
Add a holiday sleigh bell. Or pin an envelope with a gift card to your mouse. Place your mouse in your holiday centerpieces, stockings or mantle.
