Over here at Yarn Punk, we are no strangers to mixed media as part of the definition of the phrase is applying yarn to your clothing! We believe yarn shouldn’t be subjected to just one facet and our newest Yarn Punk is showing us her own realm of yarn punk! This artist is involving yarn to create new images and portraits – and the simplicity of it is outstanding.

Down below, please welcome Jennifer from Children of the Rice and enjoy the free tutorial down below! Our Yarn Punks put a lot of time and energy into their work so please be sure to support a maker that you enjoy. Leave a review, like their photos, leave a comment, etc.!

Hello, Jennifer!

“Hey Punks, this is Jen, head procraftinator at Children of the Rice/@knittingtakesballs. I love creating these mixed media pieces because they combine two loves of mine–knitting and graphic design! I learned to crochet when I was 10 (and yet, I still can’t read a crochet pattern for the life of me!) and started knitting about 3-4 years ago. In addition to knitting and crochet, I also love to sew and make jewelry with my laser cutter a.k.a. Laser Bitch. When I’m crafting, I usually like to listen to piano instrumentals or some Amon Amarth and Arch Enemy….or my Harry Potter audiobooks!”

Here’s what you need:

– 3 toothpicks
– 2 size 1 (2.00mm) knitting needles
– 1 yard of fingering weight yarn (I used Toxic Melt from Stitch Together Studio)
– laser cutter (a Cricut, Silhouette, or scissors will also work for a layered paper version)
– 1/8″ acrylic
– 1/8″ plywood
– 6×6″ shadow box frame with at least 1-1.5″ depth
– Loctite super glue
– X-acto Knife (optional)
– Adobe Illustrator (or any program that can generate SVG files)

Instructions with photos:

1. I like to sketch out my ideas as quick thumbnails prior to plopping down at my computer.
2. Draw out your design using Adobe Illustrator and start planning colors and organizing layers. You may need to readjust your concept for logistical/layering
reasons. Something may look ok on paper or in your head, but may not work with dimensional pieces.

3. Separate color files and save them separately as SVGs.

4. Start cutting your pieces! Pew pew!

5. Roughly assemble pieces to see if your layering is working out. I kept putting my eyes on upside down, but this is why we check first!

6. Weed/remove adhesive backing on cut pieces with an X-acto knife or your nails.
7. Assemble pieces by carefully applying super glue in very small amounts with a toothpick.

8. Time for knitting! Cast on 6 stitches and knit to your desired length, I knit for about 1.5″. Do not knit until end of row (stop at about midpoint).

9. Cut off about 1/2″ from end of toothpick. Repeat for remaining toothpick. Transfer stitches to toothpicks. Lightly glue to toothpicks to secure.
10. Carefully roll remaining working yarn into a tiny ball and secure with a dab of glue.
11. Position toothpicks and ball of yarn to your preferred location.
12. Carefully glue all pieces to backing board and insert into the shadow box.
13. Raise left and right hands simultaneously and give yourself a self-five, Yarn Punk!

And there you have it, your very own laser cut photo! You can always create any animal of your choosing!
